The Northbridge Board of Health is in the process of planning a community-based emergency vaccination - medication dispensing site plan. Emergency Dispensing Sites may be part of the response to an infectious disease outbreak or other public health threat that has the potential to affect people of all ages and health status. The objective for an Emergency Dispensing Site is to set up the site within 24 hours of notification and provide initial treatment for 80% of the population within 48 hours and provide for the remaining 20% over the next 72 hours.

In order for this to happen, the Board of Health is seeking individuals to staff the site. We are looking to create a comprehensive list of both medical and non-medical professional personnel who may be able to staff the site in the event of a public health crisis.

If you are interested in serving your community by becoming an integral part of the Emergency Dispensing Site Plan or would like more information as to the role that you may be able to fill, please contact the Board of Health office at (508) 234-3272.

WHAT WE DO

The first local board of health was established in 1799 in Boston, Massachusetts. Paul Revere served as Chairman of that Board of Health. He and his fellow board members were given broad authority to control the "filth and offal" that contaminated the environment and produced deadly epidemics. Today our health is threatened by an epidemic of chemical contamination, the inadequate disposal of wastes, and the emergence of new diseases.

Under Massachusetts General Laws, state and local regulations and community direction, Boards of Health are held responsible for disease prevention and control, and health and environmental protection and promoting a healthy community. Boards of Health serve as the local arm of both the Mass. Department of Public Health and the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection. To fulfill their duties, they develop, implement and enforce health policies, oversee inspections to maintain minimum standards for sanitation in housing and food service, and assure that the basic health needs of their community are being met.

The Northbridge Board of Health consists of five members, appointed for terms of three years by the Board of Selectmen.

Subject: Body Art

The Northbridge Board of Health would like to inform residents that it is ILLEGAL to perform body art (tattooing) without first obtaining the proper licenses and permits from the local Board of Health. Both the Body Art Establishment and the Body Art Practitioner MUST be licensed and the establishment must be inspected.

The Board of Health has established regulations to ensure the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare of the community. These regulations ensure strict adherence to sanitation, personal hygiene, sterilization, and aftercare requirements to prevent the transmission of diseases and injury to the client.

Needles used in tattooing and piercing can spread Hepatitis and HIV.

Before getting a tattoo, PLEASE contact the Board of Health in the community where the establishment exists to ensure that the facility has been licensed and inspected. For more information or to obtain a free brochure on body art and protecting yourself from hepatitis and HIV, please call the Board of Health office at (508) 234-3272.
